Neumarkt i.d.OPf., 6 February 2026 – A ceremonial ground-breaking ceremony on Friday, 6 February 2026, at Neumarkt railway station marks the official start of the comprehensive refurbishment of the Nuremberg–Regensburg railway line. Representatives from politics, the rail sector and the construction industry, as well as project stakeholders from RAILONE, are thus marking the start of a key infrastructure project for the Nuremberg metropolitan region and the Upper Palatinate. The aim of the project is to ensure the long-term efficiency, safety and sustainability of one of Northern Bavaria’s most important rail links.
The Nuremberg–Regensburg corridor is a key component of the Rhine–Danube European transport axis and is one of the busiest routes in Bavaria. During the five-month construction period from 6 February to 10 July 2026, Deutsche Bahn AG will carry out extensive renewal work on the 88-kilometre line, including the replacement of sleepers, points and overhead lines. This modernisation will make the line even more reliable and sustainably increase the availability of the infrastructure.
RAILONE, based in Neumarkt, is a key project partner in the refurbishment of the railway sleepers. The local company is responsible for supplying new concrete sleepers and for the professional recycling of the old sleepers that have been removed. In this way, RAILONE is making a significant contribution to the technical quality and sustainable implementation of the project. RAILONE’s contribution to this major project involves the supply of a total of approximately 75,000 new railway sleepers and the recycling of approximately 132,000 old ones. Around half of the new railway sleepers are manufactured at the Coswig plant and supplied from the Nuremberg warehouse for the first construction phase, which runs from Feucht to Neumarkt. The remaining sleepers required for the second construction phase, which runs from Neumarkt to Regensburg, will be produced at the Neumarkt plant and dispatched from there.
RAILONE is an internationally active company and ranks among the leading manufacturers of concrete sleepers and track systems for rail transport. Drawing on decades of experience, RAILONE develops and manufactures high-quality track solutions for high-speed, long-distance, regional and freight transport. The company’s products are used in railway, underground and tram networks worldwide and meet the highest standards of safety, durability and cost-effectiveness.
RAILONE places particular emphasis on sustainability. In addition to developing durable concrete sleepers, the company is firmly committed to resource-efficient production processes and innovative recycling concepts. As part of the refurbishment of the Nuremberg–Regensburg line, RAILONE is not only responsible for supplying the new railway sleepers; the locally based company is also handling the recycling of the old railway sleepers. The materials removed during the works are processed, reused or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. Concrete sleepers that can be reconditioned are put to a second life on secondary tracks. Concrete sleepers that can no longer be reconditioned are crushed, and the recyclable materials – such as concrete and steel – are also returned to the material cycle, thereby conserving natural resources and reducing CO₂ emissions.
Quote: “The combination of modern infrastructure and sustainable construction methods is crucial for the future of rail transport, and we have made this our mission. Here at RAILONE, we ensure that technical quality and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.” – CPO Verena Zahradnik.
The ground-breaking ceremony at Neumarkt station symbolises not only the start of construction work, but also a clear commitment to an efficient, sustainable and future-oriented rail infrastructure in Bavaria. Thanks to the joint commitment of Deutsche Bahn and RAILONE, the Nuremberg–Regensburg railway line is being made fit for the coming decades.
